Coast Guard Issues Updated Navigation Guidelines

Navigation regulations have gotten complicated with all the updates and regional variations flying around. As someone who stays current on these changes and has learned some lessons the hard way, I learned everything there is to know about keeping up with Coast Guard requirements. Today, I will share it all with you.

What’s New

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Updated buoy colors in several regions now match international standards. Red markers should now be kept on your starboard side when returning from sea. Memorize the phrase “red right returning” to stay safe—it’s the most important rule you’ll ever learn.

Speed Limit Changes

That’s what makes staying informed endearing to us boaters who actually read the notices—it keeps you from getting an expensive surprise. Several popular harbors have implemented new no-wake zones. Check local notices before heading out. Fines for violations have increased to $500 in many jurisdictions, and enforcement has picked up too.

Download the updated navigation charts from your regional Coast Guard website before your next trip. Taking five minutes at home beats finding out you’re in the wrong channel when you’re already there.
